Artist Vanessa Gardiner will talk about her techniques, her love of dramatic natural architecture in cliffs and chasms and her latest stunning paintings of Orkney, Cornwall and Greece.

Inspired by the natural forms of sea cliffs, and always true to the landscape she is painting, Vanessa has developed her own language in paint connected most closely to Ben Nicholson and the St Ives school but uniquely her own. This exhibition includes some of the small works on card that she used to work out her first reactions after visiting Orkney, giving a fascinating insight into the way she works.

Vanessa Gardiner’s practice echoes the process of erosion. Her surfaces are scoured and abraded, layered and scrubbed back using the media and the texture of the surface to describe her subject. Implacable rock faces convey emotional depth and charge. Areas of opaque colour abut contrasting worked sections creating tension. Lines are scored, straight or curving to delineate and divide the thresholds and contours, columns and ledges.

She has been working as a professional artist for many years. She grew up in Oxford, where her father was a philosophy don. She trained at Oxford Polytechnic and the Central School of Art and Design in London. Her work is in private collections around the world and in public collections including Exeter Hospital, Bournemouth University Collection, Dorset County Museum, Carlow Collection Ireland, the Archive of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Co. Mayo, Cowley Manor, Huddersfield Art Gallery, Fidelity International, New Hall Cambridge, Magdalen College Oxford, Wolfson College Oxford, the British Academy London and the British School in Athens. She lives in Charmouth, Dorset, with the painter Alex Lowery. They have a daughter, Jessie.

Vanessa will be in conversation with Anna Powell, Director of Sladers Yard. Sea Cliffs is the fifth solo show (plus two two-person shows) of Vanessa’s work that Anna has curated over 15 years since 2008.
