Lise Herud Braten

We are delighted to announce a solo show of a rising star, the ceramic artist Lise Herud Braten, showing at Sladers Yard in her first major solo exhibition in a commercial gallery in UK.

Lise’s primary interests lie in creating highly textured and natural, organic forms, with references to details in nature and the urban environment. Born in Oslo, her memories of growing up in Norway’s rugged landscape inform both shapes and mark-making, imbuing the pieces with a strong sense of place.

Lise works with many different techniques, from delicately thin thrown vessels to roughly textured slabs of coarse clay. Many of the pieces start off on the potter’s wheel, before being manipulated, altered and carved to soften their shape and appearance away from the perfect circular form. Combining different making techniques within each piece often results in spontaneous and unplanned shapes and structures. Using a variety of stoneware and porcelain clays, each piece is layered with slips, oxides, glazes and natural ash, applied in a painterly and abstract way. Often the pieces are fired several times, with new layers added between each firing. The resultant effect suffuses the piece with a sense of history, of time spent exposed and weathered by the natural elements. There is a sense of timelessness and quiet beauty deep within each piece.

Lise trained as a Bespoke Women’s Tailor in Norway before coming to the UK in 1996 to complete a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design at Ravensbourne College. She worked for several of London’s top couture designers before eventually creating her own design label.

She started learning to throw at Putney Art School under John Dawson in 2013. She fell in love with the material and processes immediately and continued with weekly classes for several years. Masterclasses with Shozo Michikawa, John Higgins and Hazel Richards helped develop her practice as she took on studio space at a communal studio in London. She set up her current studio with fellow maker Amanda-Sue Rope in the beginning of 2020.

She has been exhibiting in galleries and selected shows across the UK since 2017 and has been represented by Studio Tashtego in New York since 2021 and by Nickey Kehoe in LA since 2022. She became a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association and of Contemporary Applied Arts in 2022. She has shown at Collect Art Fair with CAA, the Oxford Ceramics Fair, Celebrating Ceramics, Waterperry Gardens, Ceramic Art London, Ruthin Craft Centre and Cambridge Contemporary Art. Her work is held in private collections in Europe, USA, Asia and the Middle East.
