JULIAN BAILEY is highly acclaimed for his brightly coloured, seemingly effortless paintings and drawings. Over the last five or six years however, Julian has been working extensively from the model in his studio, enjoying the economy of drawing made essential by the drypoint technique.

‘The etchings are made in small groups of twelve usually by me on a hand-turned press. A few I select to be ‘over painted‘ in gouache, making each coloured etching a one-off picture. The greatly simplified line of the diamond tip scoring into the metal plate gives off a beautiful black velvety mark, which is the unique hallmark of Drypoint. This compliments the brilliant quality of the gouache paint to make the special combination that goes into these artworks.’

We also have a good stock of unframed prints by Julian Bailey which can be viewed via the link below, available online or from the desk in the gallery.

ALEX LOWERY’s unmistakeable, atmospheric paintings constantly surprise and fascinate.

The sunshine and architecture of Greece and Sicily brought new brilliance to Alex Lowery’s recent paintings both of Ydra and Ortigia as well as his more northerly and well-known locations in Portland, West Bay and Orkney. Compositions of roofs and different planes of light set the contemporary moment against the timeless wonders of sea, sky and mountain. Alex is a painter whose sense of colour and unusual angles consistently refreshes the eye. Often linked to the work of Edward Hopper, Alex Lowery’s wide and deep knowledge of art history feed into his own highly original sensibility.

We are delighted to hold a large stock of his work which can be bought now or viewed in the gallery by prior arrangement.

CAROLINE SHARP makes both woven and clay and wood sculptures which are strongly influenced by natural form, containment and movement. They are in essence about latent and potential energy; energy within the soil and earth transformed within seeds and the emerging growth.

Woven forms are based on organic seedpod forms and the importance of respecting the character and properties of the materials used is paramount. The tips of the stem, the catkins and buds are left exposed to suggest fragility and transience. Caroline uses coppiced material in her woven pieces as this reflects her aim to be as kind to the environment as possible.

Fiamma Colonna Montagu is an artist specialising in large-scale ceramic sculpture and site-specific commissions. Her vessels and small maquettes, often the first stage for large-scale work, are available alongside major pieces at Sladers Yard, set in the Dorset landscape that inspires her. We are also delighted to organise site-specific commissions.

Fiamma’s sculptures are made combining porcelain with numerous stoneware clays – black, red, buff and stone grey – which she high fires with cobalt and iron oxides. Each ‘element’ is thrown, shaped or hand carved and high fired, before being assembled into the piece, The result is sculpture with strongly contrasting elements, the delicate qualities of porcelain against the rough and powerful stoneware.

More of Fiamma’s work can be seen in the gallery and will be added to this website shortly. Please register your interest if you would like a notification when they are available to view online.

To register your interest in any of the artists in the exhibition, or any enquiries please contact us on gallery@sladersyard.co.uk.

Additional ceramics by Peter Hayes, Gabriele Koch,  Adela Powell, Sue Ure and Paul Wearing. Bronze sculpture by Clare Trenchard. Textiles by Margo Selby, and Wallace Sewell. Jewellery by Crystal Johnson. Books, prints and accessories will also be constantly renewed.
