Both Anthony Garratt and Frances Hatch paint the outdoors in all weather and times of year, including natural materials in their work.

Anthony Garratt explores the political and emotional evidence of the human within the landscapes he paints, alongside the nature of the paint itself, creating paintings filled with energy and mood.

Frances Hatch invites conversation with the stuff of her chosen place, including the dynamic exchanges in light and weather she experiences there, allowing the rain and environment to engage with the paint and radically change her work.

Adela Powell created beautiful ceramics inspired by waste and the magic nature works with decay, rust and weathering. Fascinated by the natural world, Adela also enjoyed the playful, skilful alchemy of clay itself.

Petter Southall responds to superb natural timber in furniture designs that combine an exciting fluidity with tactile strength. Always original and surprising in his understated and brilliantly judged detailing, Petter’s pieces consistently take your breath away.

Anthony Garratt Loch oil on canvas 60 x 60cm

Anthony Garratt’s artistic practice is diverse but rooted in a passion for our relationship with the concept of ‘landscape’. Much of his studio time is spent excited by the action of painting; finding marks and devices which are rehearsed and evolved before committing them to a solution. It is this experimentation that stimulates change in the work.

Frances Hatch ARWS is acclaimed for her radical and innovative approach to landscape painting. Each of her pictures is a moment of time in a particular place. Materials from that place will be included in the picture, which is made there and then, every element reflecting what she found when she was there.

Adela Powell 1. Brown Shell Form H16 x W44cm

Adela Powell’s ceramics were inspired by the sea and coastal landscape. She searched for universal patterns, textures and forms in nature, where science and art are inseparable. Her method was experimental and different every time. She used various clays including mud from the Dorset coast and from the Tamar River where she lived. Sometimes she incorporated other material she found at the water’s edge, both organic and inorganic. The inherent tactile and textural qualities of clay are enhanced with many layers of oxides, slips and glazes which she fired to 1265 degrees C in an electric kiln after a bisque firing in a gas kiln.

Petter Southall. Low Folding Fireside Chair in burr and tiger oak H58 x W54 x D55cm

Petter Southall has been making his distinctive furniture, and more recently architectural and sculptural pieces, in Dorset since 1989. He combines traditional Norwegian wooden boatbuilding with highly skilled cabinetmaking techniques to create work that looks simple and entirely original. A group of his exceptional pieces is on permanent display at Sladers Yard. To this he adds works he makes to explore new ideas. A recent workshop move to Denhay northwest of Bridport after 30 years at Chilcombe has opened a new chapter in his career and new thoughts about bringing wood into people’s lives in interesting, ethical and life-enhancing pieces of work.
